In nature, this axis is situated in the south-west and provides an exclusively deep perspective to both directions of the courtyard. In the building, the axis is situated between the 4 functional areas and creates a vivid intersection of various emotions. This position of the intersection opens up a vista in the sky by means of a roof opening. What emphasizes the notion of Axis Mundi even more is a conflux of seven interior planes, which serves as the starting point for the elements mentioned above. The volume of the apartment building stretches over the entire lot of land along Mednieku Street. The composition and rhythm of the facade proportionally divides the building into different functional zones. The zones are divided by means of various architectural details, such as bay windows, balconies and various vertical elements which comply to the historic building context, character and scale. The usual historic ornamental design methods are replaced by a variety of fills in the form of shadow joints, dense composition of operational windows and fixed glazing and the overall rhythm of division. The commercial facade on the first floor level ends 1 meter from the border line thus covering the front area and creating an inviting and relaxed atmosphere. The seven-storey apartment building also features a basement floor which functions as a parking lot. The ground floor area is used for commercial purposes and as an entrance to the apartment complex. The other storeys feature apartments of various sizes and layouts. Theglazed staircase and elevator shaft visually separates the courtyard-facing volume from the street-facing volume, ensures that the building receives plenty of natural daylight and provides communication with the outdoor space. The individually designed apartment lobbies possess emotional importance to the residents of the building since they not only act as a connection to the outside but also stimulates the feeling of belonging and independence by means of contrast. The open, visually bold lobbies act as a naturally-lit apartment front yards. CERES STREET The composition of the building volumes is the reflection of the client's wishes to create separate volumes with separate functions. The volumes are lifted up from the ground thus creating a visually separated courtyard which gives an illusion of a safe and secure space. Visual communication is achieved only through the common courtyard. To enhance the spatial logic, stairs and corridors are placed between the functional volumes which emphasize the difference between the various functions. Everything has its own place in the building - the architectural elements have drawn clear boundaries andthere is no overlap of the different functions.
